Privacy Policy

Allis is a publication, not a data business. We collect the minimum information required to send you a newsletter and operate this website. We do not sell it, rent it, or trade it. We do not run advertising networks. We do not build profiles for third parties.

This policy explains exactly what we collect, why, and what you can do about it. We have tried to write it in plain language. Where legal language is unavoidable, we have explained what it means.

This policy applies to residents of the United States and Canada and to all visitors to dearallis.com.

1. Who We Are

Allis is an independent editorial publication operating at dearallis.com. For purposes of this policy, “Allis,” “we,” “us,” and “our” refer to the publication and its operators.

2. Information We Collect

Email address. If you subscribe to the Allis letter, we collect the email address you provide. This is the only personal information we collect directly. Submission of your email address constitutes express consent to receive the Allis newsletter.

Usage and analytics data. We use PostHog to understand how visitors use this website. PostHog automatically collects your IP address, browser type, operating system, referring URL, pages visited, and interactions with the site. This data is associated with a pseudonymous session identifier, not your name or email address.

Server and access logs. Like all websites, our hosting infrastructure automatically records standard server logs when your browser requests a page. These logs may include your IP address, browser type, referring URL, and the date and time of the request. They are retained for security and operational purposes and are not used to identify or profile you.

What we do not collect. We do not use advertising pixels or cross-site tracking. We do not collect names, phone numbers, or payment information. We do not track your behavior across other websites.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use your email address solely to send you the Allis newsletter. We do not use it for any other commercial purpose. We do not send you third-party marketing, and we do not share your address with advertisers.

We use analytics data to understand which content is useful, how visitors navigate the site, and where the reading experience breaks down. We use it to improve the publication — not to build individual profiles or serve targeted advertising.

Server logs are used exclusively to diagnose technical issues and protect the website against abuse.

4. Third-Party Services

Kit (email delivery). We use Kit (kit.com, operated by ConvertKit, LLC, based in the United States) to manage our subscriber list and deliver the newsletter. When you subscribe, your email address is transmitted to and stored on Kit’s servers. Kit acts as a data processor on our behalf and is contractually prohibited from using your information for their own commercial purposes.

Kit’s privacy practices are governed by their own Privacy Policy, available at kit.com. Email opens, clicks, and delivery data within the newsletter are tracked by Kit as part of standard email delivery operations.

PostHog (analytics). We use PostHog, Inc. (posthog.com, based in the United States) for product analytics. PostHog receives usage data as described in Section 2, including your IP address and browsing behavior on this site. PostHog processes this data on our behalf and is contractually restricted from using it for their own commercial purposes. PostHog’s privacy practices are described in their Privacy Policy at posthog.com/privacy.

Hosting infrastructure. This website is served by a third-party cloud hosting provider. Standard server logs (described in Section 2) are processed by that provider as part of normal infrastructure operations.

No other third-party services receive your personal data.

5. Email Communications

Every newsletter we send includes an unsubscribe link. You may opt out at any time by clicking that link or by emailing us at privacy@dearallis.com. We will process unsubscribe requests within ten (10) business days.

In compliance with the U.S. CAN-SPAM Act, our commercial emails include a valid postal address. In compliance with Canada’s Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL), we send commercial electronic messages only to those who have provided express consent by submitting their email address, and every message includes a functional unsubscribe mechanism.

6. Cookies

This website uses the following cookies:

  • Analytics cookies (PostHog). PostHog sets cookies to identify your browser session across page loads and to record usage events. These include a persistent identifier (typically ph_* prefixed keys in local storage or a cookie). They do not identify you by name. You may opt out by enabling Do Not Track in your browser — PostHog respects the DNT signal — or by using a content blocker.
  • Preview cookie (functional). A session-scoped cookie named __prerender_bypass enables authenticated editor access to unpublished content. It is set only when an editor authenticates preview mode and is never set for regular visitors.

We use no advertising cookies, third-party tracking pixels, or cross-site behavioral tracking technology.

7. Your Rights

California Residents (CCPA / CPRA)

California residents have the following rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act and California Privacy Rights Act:

  • Right to Know. You may request disclosure of the categories and specific pieces of personal information we have collected about you, the purposes for collection, and the categories of third parties with whom we share it.
  • Right to Delete. You may request deletion of your personal information. We will delete or direct the deletion of your data unless a legal exception applies.
  • Right to Correct. You may request correction of inaccurate personal information.
  • Right to Opt Out of Sale or Sharing. We do not sell your personal information and do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. No opt-out action is required.
  • Right to Non-Discrimination. We will not discriminate against you for exercising any of these rights.

To exercise these rights, submit a verifiable request to privacy@dearallis.com. We will respond within 45 days. We may need to verify your identity before processing the request.

Canadian Residents (PIPEDA / CASL)

Under Canada’s Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), you have the right to:

  • Access. Request access to the personal information we hold about you and obtain an account of how it has been used and to whom it has been disclosed.
  • Correction. Challenge the accuracy and completeness of your information and request that it be corrected.
  • Withdrawal of consent. Withdraw consent to our use or disclosure of your personal information, subject to legal or contractual restrictions and reasonable notice. Note that withdrawing consent to receive the newsletter means we cannot send it to you.
  • Complaint. Lodge a complaint with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada if you believe we have not complied with PIPEDA.

Submit requests to privacy@dearallis.com. We will respond within 30 days.

Other U.S. State Residents

Residents of Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Utah, Texas, Oregon, Montana, and other states with applicable comprehensive privacy laws have similar rights to access, correct, delete, and obtain a portable copy of their personal information, and to opt out of the sale of personal data. We do not sell personal data. To exercise any of these rights, contact us at privacy@dearallis.com.

8. International Data Transfers

If you are located in Canada, your email address will be transferred to and processed in the United States by Kit (ConvertKit, LLC). U.S. privacy laws differ from Canadian law, including PIPEDA, and may not offer equivalent protections. By subscribing, you consent to this transfer. You may withdraw consent at any time by unsubscribing.

9. Data Retention

We retain your email address for as long as you are subscribed. When you unsubscribe, we remove your address from our active mailing list promptly. Kit may retain suppression records (a record that you unsubscribed) to prevent accidental re-addition; this is standard practice and required to honor your opt-out.

Server logs are retained for a limited period consistent with security and operational needs, typically no longer than 90 days.

10. Data Security

We implement reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your personal information against unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction. This website is served exclusively over HTTPS. Email subscriber data is held by Kit under their own security controls.

No method of transmission over the internet or method of electronic storage is completely secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security.

11. Children

This website and newsletter are not directed at individuals under the age of 16. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 16. If we become aware that we have collected personal information from a child under 16 without verifiable parental or guardian consent, we will delete it.

12. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy when our practices change or when law requires it. We will post the revised policy at this URL with an updated effective date. If the changes are material, we will notify subscribers by email. Your continued use of the website or subscription to the newsletter after the effective date constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
